1. The image you have in your mind of how exactly your pages and scenes will look will never line up 1 to 1 with the final product.. and that’s okay. Trying to be perfect will only harm your creativity and make completing your work an impossibility. Remember, this is just one project out of many you are capable of making, not your magnum opus. 2. Continuing that thought, the single best advice I would give anyone trying to begin making their stories a reality is to START SMALL. In the Manga industry, there is something called a “Yonkoma 4コマ” or 4 Panel Manga. This is the absolute best place to start- if you can’t tell a story with art you’re happy with on a single page and four panels, then it’s not time to bite off an entire multi issue series. Start small, and go for the big fish after. These little projects will only help you improve. 3. Stop being afraid of making mistakes on your drawing- even during the inking phase. At first, I was super shaky and terrified that my lines wouldn’t come out perfect or that I would smudge the ink everywhere and ruin the panel- but there is always a way to fix it. Whiteout will become your best friend as a Manga artist- sometimes, messing up even leads to a better panel! 4. Study your idols. I wish I had done more master studies before starting my Manga, because I struggled a lot on finding my style of rendering during the project. The best way to learn how to render the way you love is to literally copy Mangaka you look up to, and the panels that mean so much to you. 5. This is a big one. MINDFUL READING. From now on, when you’re reading a manga or watching an anime- be mindful about the things you like and dislike, and keep a mental note for the next time you’re creating. This is the absolute best way to learn what types of stories you should be creating and what mistakes to avoid.
