Eight years ago, Gus released his debut album, Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1. Recorded between late 2016 and mid-2017 while Gus was living in Los Angeles, COWYS was a collaborative project with his friend and producer Smokeasac. The process was new and exciting for Gus. While continuing to record and release EPs and singles with friends, he and Smokeasac also worked with seasoned industry professionals such as Rob Cavallo on numerous songs for Gus’s first album, seven of which were eventually selected for the first part of the record, released on August 15, 2017. Gus moved to a small apartment in Echo Park, L.A., at the end of August 2016. He had already begun recording Hellboy and completed and released it at the end of September. The idea of creating his first studio album was thrilling, and he began brainstorming concepts with friends nearly a year before its release. Through the fall and winter of 2016–17, he experimented with potential titles and artworks. In December, he began recording the first songs for the album with Smokeasac. “Benz Truck” was created on December 18, 2016, and released as the album’s lead single on June 9, 2017. During this period, Gus was prolific — recording CASTLES II with Tracy, releasing a run of singles, and producing a wealth of tracks intended for his debut album. At the end of July 2017, Gus announced Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1, accompanied by the release of its second single, “The Brightside.” That same week, he and Tracy filmed the music video for “Awful Things” at Ribét Academy in L.A., directed by Sus Boy and Nick Koenig. Actress Page Ruth co-starred alongside Gus, portraying fellow students at the school. It was one of Gus’s first and only “big budget” videos, backed by a professional creative team. Proud that the final cut matched his vision, Gus announced its release in a clip filmed at home with his dog, Taz, just three days after dropping COWYS. Eight years on, Gus’s debut album still holds a pivotal place in his discography and a special place in the hearts of his fans. It remains the only studio album he released himself during his lifetime and includes several of his most successful songs. With COWYS, Gus took a major step forward in his career, experiencing firsthand what it was like to work in a professional studio with both familiar collaborators and new industry figures. Even if the process was sometimes stressful, he enjoyed creating alongside his friend Smokeasac and was proud of what they achieved together.
