Nurse Qwinnie: That’s a very good question, Mama. Sometimes, a baby with an unusually big head and visible veins might have a condition called hydrocephalus , that’s when too much fluid builds up in the baby’s brain. This can make the head swell and stretch the skin, so the veins show more clearly. One of the reasons this can happen is not getting enough folic acid before and during early pregnancy. Folic acid helps the baby’s brain and spine form properly. That’s why we encourage all women to start taking folic acid even before getting pregnant and continue during the first few months.
