@spcorrigan: Indonesia’s Opposition Myth? Having an opposition sounds good on paper. Checks. Balance. Accountability. But in Indonesia, it’s more myth than reality. After losing the presidential election, PDIP held the most seats of any single party in parliament but was left out of any coalition. Megawati delayed taking a political stance and in classic Megawati style, she just stayed silent...for months. The PDIP congress was repeatedly delayed, fueling speculation. Then came an unexpected amnesty for Hasto. But this story isn’t just about Hasto or the PDIP congress. When Megawati finally spoke, it wasn’t a declaration of opposition, it was something murkier. A grey zone that signaled what some insiders already suspected, PDIP wasn’t stepping into the role of opposition at all. And this isn’t just about PDIP. It’s about a political system that keeps repeating itself, where true opposition is almost impossible and parties nearly always end up orbiting around power. And this sets the stage for what comes next. October will bring moves that help Prabowo consolidate control and reshape the balance of power in his favor. #indonesia #prabowo #pdiperjuangan #megawati #politik #indonesian

indonesia adore politician not ideology, if they choose Anies, they will see him as 'god' didnt care what the ideology or party. unlike other country that choose specific ideology or party, such as anti-immigrant or pro-immigrant. in indonesia they didnt care, they just care about the politician

i think, the only opposition for the Indonesian government in this current situation is their own society, people, us.

the real opposition to the government is actually the people themselves.

i think your point of it being less political but more personal just nails it considering how a lot of parties in power here rely on a singular figure to lead the party and it truly is up to them on most of the choices and not the party members nor even the higher ups within that party

you should look more into how the javanese politics work, this is what influences indonesian political dynamics. On the surface they look like they are seeking for consensus but deep down there will be parties that seek opportunities to gain more power not through vocal or in a confrontational manner, but through other means that are not seen by the public eyes.

the most genuine opposition was during sby era, though as u have mentioned it might not truly work in parliament. but still at that time was the maximum effort of pdip compared during jokowi and prabowo presidency.

I beg to differ, they do have ideologies except they are all more or less aligned. The ideology of "shameless greed" and "gotong royong", working together to fleece the people. Never about nation building. Few occasional exceptions but that's what it is

after the years... ALL POLITICAL PARTY in Indonesia learned that, becoming an opposition force is a "lonely path without any money nor offices, broke and cold in the corner" Its so dreadful they chose surrender to the winner. ---- Democracy is long dead in Indonesia 🤨😢

excellent analysis, however pushing back jokowi influence might setback prabowo in the coming 2nd term. is there a need to do that?

Because the Indonesian’s truly opposite is jokowi😀 as long as prabowo doesn’t stirred by him, is not impossible PDIP is in coalition
