I think, I don't think of punishment, I think of protection. Will I allow someone to change their tune without acknowledgment of past harm? Will I allow this person to move in community, even as they dodge ownership of past transgressions? Can I be in a community that lets folks monetize depravity? From my view, it's about giving people facts and then letting the decisions be made. I don't know if this is the same as accountability. I think I don't trust the folks that hide their errors to remain "righteous". There's so much power in admitting "I was wrong". That's where I am.

People took picnics to lynching and that makes me examine everything I find entertaining AND morally vindicating in some way. Am I at a lynching? Am I part of an enraged mob right now? Am I a villager with a torch chasing the witch out?

I really appreciate this line of thinking. I think we are so removed from all the necessary things for *true* accountability. People are so isolated from community, we don't have access to resources, we aren't give a lot of tools and education on how to repair when harm is done. And in a world where true healing and growth from community harm feels inaccessible, mob justice is a much easier tool for change. So then especially in our current country where we feel so powerless to affect widespread harm happening on a daily basis, and are so hungry for change, it makes sense that we get this gut feeling desire to partake in easily accessible mob justice, even if we know it doesnt align with our beliefs.

I agree. I don't necessarily sympathize or feel sorry for those people. But I don't like where the demand for accountability takes me as a person. It makes me feel like a conservative.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to punish or see them punished. I think that’s human. It gets problematic when that sense of vengeance is cloaked in “accountability”. It’s when people pretend that being carceral and retaliatory is pious and morally superior that things go wrong.

I feel like the way in which accountability is being wielded recently is not sustainable. I truly feel like in order to have true accountability. There needs to be some modicum of a relationship set in place to help the person correct the behavior.

I relate to this heavily. I also have to recognize that we are human and have strong emotions and reactions. The urge to punish comes from anger and grief. It’s what we do with that emotion? Do we let it pass and reflect, or do we act on it? But we have to remember that we are still animals and we can’t fully think ourselves out of our bodies responses.

This puts my thinking into words I hadn’t developed bc I immediately thought that seeking to punish may make me part of the problem. The discourse seems to be different sides punishing each other over and over. The natural consequence is the loss of respect and I’m ok with that but beyond that I don’t know that I am equipped for much else so outside of this post I’d rather work through my thoughts as part of my personal work.
