@kistreadsbooks: If separating the art from the artist works for you, that’s your deal. I’m not required to do the same. And if you need strangers to co-sign your reading habits, I'm sorry to tell ya that your guilt ≠ my responsibility. Additionally, I’m not perfect and I don’t know every situation surrounding every author but I do my best (for ex: you’re probably not going to see me doing the literary equivalent of Joey Swoll lifting in full Hogan regalia), and you’re welcome/encouraged to hmu if you see me platforming an author with serious issues. #BookTok #artvsartist #bookrant

Honestly, it can be very difficult for me to separate the art from the artist. Especially when it comes to the author of the manga Rurouni Kenshin. Just knowing what that guy got in trouble for makes me no want to read that manga. Same with Neil Gaiman since I’ve been meaning to read his works for a long time but I personally don’t want to anymore.

There are so many amazing books written by good, caring people. I think I’ll be okay if I don’t read THAT person’s books

isn't "separating the art from the artist" about media analysis, rather than being about supporting an artist ( financially or otherwise)

Well said dude! 👏 If the artist is still profiting from the work, I don’t think it is possible to separate the two ✌️

I like how you said “if I am aware of it”. I read many books from Gaiman before all this came out and I honestly really liked his work and have at least 3 more that I bought and had on my TBR. However, after all this came out, I can’t and I won’t recommend him.

I love recognizing authors within the work they create and the messages they’re attempting to pass through story. Which leads me to struggle with separating their ideals from that creation.

Generally I totally agree, can’t stand that saying. UNLESS the artist can no longer use profit from the art you’re consuming to fund their harmful/problematic behaviour or ideology… yknow? Then I’m kinda okay with splitting up the art and artist. Especially if the artist has long since passed, and whoever’s receiving the profit today doesn’t share or support the artists beliefs/actions.

I never liked that state to begin with, art is personal and often a reflection of the artists experiences and beliefs, so if someone problematic is writing something reflective of that why would I want to separate it? No matter how good the art is.
