With this solution you need to do a backup. You are not safe. Risk of losing data is very high

storage engineer here, welcome! this is a decent solution but you are at the mercy of a component that will fail. a used office computer from e Bay with 2 or 4 drive bays and truenas scale or open media vault would be my next suggested step.

It’s expensive, but Best Buy currently has a seagate 26 tb external hard drive on sale for $250.

Do you plan to make your library accessible while on the go? Meaning you can login in to your server from a dedicated website.

My biggest concern with this is if the files get corrupted if they are on a external SSD or hard drive and they are kept in a generic home setting will they be safe?

You're doing great, it's gotta be practical and functional, otherwise you'll give up long before you get your library curated to enjoy the fruits of your labor. I use an older PC and refurbished server drives myself

Thanks for doing the rundown. I’m looking at storage for my own media (not viewer, but media I’m working on). I may wind up building out a NAS solutions so I can swap drives in the event of drive failure. This is really cool for something like this as long as you don’t mind duplicating work in the event of drive failure!

Thank you. This is amazing and I wish more people would discuss these kinds of solutions aimed at budget conscious people

Honestly, I just use cheap external USB hard drives. Right now, I’m using a 12TB Western Digital MyBook which costs $209. But I would go for the 24TB Seagate Expansion for $289

at least mirror the drives. it's going to take a long time to re-rip all those disks when a device fails

Hard drives are getting so cheap now. Also this is why making files smaller is the best option. You don't need files at 7gb unless your wanting highest quality, mine at around 1gb look great and it's hard to tell the difference.

there's a cheaper, easier solution if you're willing to tinker a bit. pick up an old dell optiplex off eBay for $50, a pcie SATA expansion card, a sata power splitter, and as many hard drives as possible. obviously NAS drives are best but any sata drive will do. plug the expansion card into the optiplex pcie port on the mobo, plug in all the drives, then you can use windows storage spaces to combine all the drives into 1 pool so on your pc, you'll see all the drives combined into 1 drive letter. another optional step is using Plex media server to watch all the media on different devices in your network. whole thing should cost $100-$300 depending on how much media you want to store

Another benefit to getting these drives like this is you won’t have to buy whole new ones if you decide to build out a media center rig!!

There’s really no reason to be ripping raw files. Run time through handbreak. Even 1080p with 7.1 files will be 6-14gb. Seagate Ironwolf FTW

I know this is a bit old at this point but I've been following your guides on building my own streaming platform and I looked into the hard drives and the nas.. would you recommend this one or something else it's the same price point as the same hard drives you show in the video but I don't want to buy the wrong thing and is there any difference in set up with a nas system https://a.co/d/0gVzBkYt

I’m telling you the best way if you’re getting media or creating media is keep it under a gig in size television shows under half that way you can fit everything and it still looks great. If you want a 25 gig file for a movie with some astronomical IMAX sound go for it but you’re gonna pay the price and have to buy more hard drive drive space.
