High in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, near the historic Samurai Road between Magome and Tsumago, we join a rare, immersive experience: a modern-day yamabushi practice in the quiet forests of Agi, a remote village in Nakatsugawa City. Led by a practitioner of Shugendō, an ancient Japanese mountain faith blending Buddhism, Shinto, and animism, the journey begins with sutra chanting, a purifying river ritual, and a sacred pilgrimage to Kazakami Shrine. Along the way, local beliefs are shared — including stories of Ojizō-sama, guardian spirits of travelers. This experience brought together people from Japan, Taiwan, and Madagascar, each touched by the sense of deep, living tradition in Japan’s countryside.
