💚 1. Liking nature isn’t a career plan. If your only motivation is “I love animals” or “I like hiking,” you’ll burn out fast. Conservation work includes a variety of topics such as policy, data, fundraising, negotiations, and not as much time in the field as one may think. 💰 2. Passion won’t pay the bills. The conservation sector unfortunately runs on underpaid, overqualified people. It's key to advocate for yourself and diversify your skill set (learn GIS, data, policy, business, tech skills) to get the compensation you deserve. 🐼 3. Conservation isn't always cute. Working in conservation doesn't always involve cute animals or being in pretty places. It can be messy, complex and slow. Success doesn't always mean you see results. 🔥 4. Impact ≠ sacrifice Conservationists strive for impact, sometimes to their own detriment. The people who stay and make change often are the ones who set boundaries, and recognize that their career isn’t their whole identity. 🗣️ 5. You need more than science. The best conservationists I’ve seen weren’t just ecologists—they were communicators, negotiators, and strategists. If you can’t talk to a farmer, policymaker, or CEO in their language, your data means nothing. 🌱 Working in conservation is not as easy as some may think, but comes with great reward. That's why I'm sharing my experiences to help others who are interested in pursuing a career working for nature.
