My freshman year Marine Bio seminar was just a new person from the field coming once a week to “tell us what they did” and all of them told us to not join the field unless we wanted to be working 2-3jobs to pay the bills

I grew up dreaming of being a chemist, got my degree and got a super cool job. Loved it for a year or two until I realized how expensive life is. Moved to consulting its lame but pays better. Unfortunately the cool jobs people want so they pay less

even the pharma jobs don't pay like they used to because these companies are getting a lot more H1Bs. Don't get me wrong, they're very talented scientists and I love working with these people because I learn a lot from them. But the corps use them to depress our wages.

I wanted to be an entomologist. The dream was to do fieldwork studying eusocial insects. However, I had a soccer coach who was an entomologist, and he informed me that I would most likely end up in pest control or being a peon in a lab because the kind of things that I wanted to do were only accessible to people who were already rich and could fund their own work. Harsh, but he was right.

After I graduated with my BA in marine bio research, I went looking for work that require a BA in biology or higher. They’re all starting ur pay at barely above minimum wage, one requiring a almost 2-3 hour commute just to get to the lab. Even one at NOAA required you to work/camp on a inhabited island for over 2 month for free to even be considered for that position. and fresh graduates are fighting for these positions.
