how wld they make $30 hr if the shop labor rate is between $60-$72 hr? then insurance companies always cuts ur estimates, body r&I and r&r times keeps getting lower, while paint times have increased..

It’s doable. I work for the union maintaining buses as a bodyman. I hit $120k 2 years ago. $150+ last year because of our retro and this year at $49.79/hr I’ll will be hitting between 140 - 150k by the end of the year. The reason why I could hit between $4500 to sometimes nearing $7k bi-weekly is due to our union agreement. Sunday premium, night shift dif, double pay on all hours after 40 and triple pay every holiday.So yeah doable provided you’re on the right employer.

None of this matters unless you’re in a shop that can give you the work. If you want to clear 20 hours and by Friday there’s nothing to do then you will never hit your goals and that one Friday will throw off your yearly goals. His calculations look good till you take a vacation and now are doing this math of 50 weeks. It’s not impossible but it’s far from easy or average.

Trying to do this ! Currently flagging about 60 hours a week 😭. Im aiming for 70-75. I would like to get into work at 6 am but the boss doesn’t open the shop until 8 and basically kicks everybody out at 5 😅

what people need to understand. you gotta be in the proper shop. usually 40% commission and doing the mechanical. making sure the shop hourly rate isnt too low (do your research for the area) sheets have to be healthy as well. your pen will make you the most money.

All in the mindset and work ethic, I’m at almost 130k so far this year, and it’s been slower than usual. At a dealership, 99 % of my work is Porsche, bmw and Land Rover.

As long as I put 20 hours in paint and assemble 20 hours a day I’m a happy camper it’s relatively easy if you work at a busy shop
