When men doubt my posts about chronic pain, I urge them to talk to the women in their lives—whether it’s their mother, daughter, sister, aunt, or cousins. Chronic pain affects one in two women. If you think conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, or other health issues women face are exaggerated or made up, I can almost guarantee there’s at least one woman you know who’s experienced them. Ask her about her interactions with healthcare providers; chances are, she’s been dismissed or told her pain wasn’t real. I also want to say how refreshing and amazing it is when men share stories of the women in their lives. On one of my recent posts, a dad commented about his frustration watching his daughter go through medical gaslighting.
