Thac0 wasn't that bad. The real killer for me was it had a bespoke mechanic for everything. I have an 17 Dexterity did not mean a +3 modifier, it meant you had a plus one reaction adjustment, a plus three defensive adjustment, and a plus two missile adjustment. plus 5% on pickpocket plus 10% on opening doors... etc rtc

thaco is just attack bonus vs ac in negatives i steady of positives. thats why it confuses people. Thaco isnt nearly as confusing as people make it out to be, 3rd ed and on are still using the same system but in addition instead of subtraction.

I still feel that Pathfinder was The ultimate edition first edition Pathfinder is the best edition of dungeons & dragons out there. every time they add something to fifth edition it just gets to be more of a disappointment

I played from 2nd edition, so I can completely understand people's confusion on THAC0. We grew up playing with it so it made sense, but much prefer how streamlined the process was with 3.5; high Number and Positives good, low number and negatives bad. Yeah it was still maths heavy but it was easier for everyone to get into it. At the end of the day I would rather have a system that is easier to learn so more people can join in, then you always add layers of complexity on top afterwards. Still a fan of Pathfinder 1st edition for this very reason.

People who couldn't do the basic arithmetic to comprehend THAC0 should probably find something else to play because being called upon to add up the digits on more than three dice is likely to cause them mental trauma.

I played in the THAC0 days. It's really not as hard as he makes out. It is unintuitive, but not that hard, once you get used to it. There were many worse rules in AD&D.
