Two years ago I (Gwyn) graduated with a Ph.D. in geography. After YEARS of doing scientific research, teaching in higher ed, and working in sustainable food systems I FULLY thought I’d become a professor. Instead… I became a full-time content creator. 😳📸 Here’s a little more about how I got here, and why it’s never too late to change paths. ⤵️ I spent over a decade earning a bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD, all with one goal: working in academia. But somewhere along the way I lost my spark for academia. Last fall, I left a postdoc job to do something TOTALLY different… and now, for nearly a year, I’ve been a full time ✨influencer.✨ And, surprisingly, this work is not just taking cute photos in pretty places… 👀 These days I work as a photographer, blogger, and content creator telling stories about travel and the outdoors. The hours are long and I work more than I did in a salaried position, but I love what I do. And I am eternally grateful for you all, because you’re the reason I get to do this as a career. 🧡 As a kid I NEVER thought my creative pursuits were viable “career paths,” or that I could turn my love for travel and the outdoors into a career. In my mind, those jobs were only for elite dudes (yes, it’s mostly men) that land @natgeo covers, and for exceptionally talented artistic prodigies. Me? Definitely not a prodigy! Just a girl with a camera and a love of the outdoors. 👩🏻‍🎨 Somehow, this became my job! But…. Do I feel awkward when people ask what I do for work? Yep. 😅
Do I feel nervous about the job instability, even though I earn more now than I would as a first-year professor? Also yep. 💸
Was it still 100% worth it? Absolutely. 🙌🏼 If you’ve been feeling stuck, uninspired, or out of alignment — this is your sign that it’s okay to pivot. It’s not too late. Your life doesn’t have to follow a linear path. 🧡 #careerchange #influencer #socialmedia #phdjourney #phdone career changes in your 30s | from Ph.D. to social media influencer | Ph.D. content creators | leaving academia to become an influencer | Ph.D. drop out stories | leaving higher education
