At my father’s wake I had a hard time keeping a straight face. He left a clause in his Will saying all the gold teeth had to be pulled, and finding someone to do it was a production. His mouth looked strange and it was a bad embalming job. It was kind of comical.

I have a question. When you go to retrieve a body? How common is it to have people ask if they can kiss their diseased loved ones before you take them? I did. I was SO unbelievably embarrassed. I asked if I could give my grandmother a kiss. I thought I was disgusting. And I didn’t tell anyone for YEARS. But now? I’m not so embarrassed. Yet still. Do people ask you that?

I have one for you. My aunt always stood in the back and announce to all Doesn’t she look like her self. Every funeral. I asked my friend who owned a funeral home. When I die can you make me sit up and say don’t I look like my self?

My kids were the runners. They didn't go near their grandmother and refused a viewing of their father. I will go to the casket and say a brief goodbye but honestly I can't blame the boys. I'm not sure I'd want to see my dad in the casket either.
