I just walk away from my child when he’s acting like that, I go to a place where he cannot see me. I think once he realizes I’m not entertaining the tantrum, he does not care anymore. I’ll coach him through a meltdown, but a tantrum, Ignore.

Our baby started tantrums early but at 15/16months it became crazy. She was pulling her hair, and everybody said when she feels pain- she will stop… NOPE. She doesn’t like to be hugged in those moments and she doesn’t hear if we try to comfort her. Then I started observing more than ever and one day I just connected dots. She loves loves loves to be included and to learn. The moment I realize the tantrum is gonna be a big one- I start to do things around the house (or outside- depends of course) and redirect her to “help me”. Like: “oh so many laundry around the house , I have to pick them all. “ and the more I go into describing the easier it is. Or if I am outside: “omg I forgot my ID. Can tou help me find it” And then I just open entire bag and put everything out. Not sure if this is right way, but sometimes it is really effective. Sometimes we just let her put all her emotions out so she can learn and understand them, but when things heat up- what I described is our way to go.

My 14month old is exactly the same. I’m finding this phase of motherhood super hard at times. She seems to only do it for me too, not her dad, grandparents, just mummy. Hard not to get upset by it.

As an ex nanny to a kid like this dont touch them while they do this. Let them know when they’re done they can come to you. Until then dont interact. Might take a while tho. But they’ll eventually seek comfort

What we do to limit tantrums- COMMUNICATE. Let them know- “one more time on the swing and then we’re all done! Okay say all done!! Say bye bye swing! Let’s go to the car! Bye bye park! Now we’re going home to see our kitties and we’re going to have lunch.” Makes it more predictable. Sometimes it doesn’t work but DEFINITELY has helped.

My 14 months old girl also has her tantrums so what I do is use distraction like I ask her “what colour is that flower?” “Oh look! That guy is wearing a red top!” “Let’s sing your fave song now” 👏
