Figuring out how best to glaze pots is a whole skill in itself, you learn overtime, testing new methods until something just works. What I realised once I got my own studio, is that glazing doesn’t have to happen all at once, nor does it need to be rushed. These bud vases are a great example of that. I used to submerge them entirely, the glaze bubbling into the form, then after a few seconds, I’d draw it out and let the excess glug back out through the opening, often spilling over the exterior form. It left a messy surface, think drips and thicker regions of glaze forming on the outside, which I’d then have to spend much more time cleaning over in order to make it flush and neat. The bonus I guess, was having them all glazed in a single day. Yet, what I realised is that I don’t need to rush the process, I understand this isn’t applicable to everybody’s situations but for me it works wonderfully. On a Monday I coat the interiors or exteriors only, then the following day I coat whatever sections remain bare, it takes longer yet I’m left with far better surfaces that require less work and personally, this is the route I’d rather take.
