PHALABORWA — Residents in parts of Limpopo were reportedly startled by brief ground vibrations after a minor earthquake was detected in the early hours of Sunday morning. The tremor, measured at magnitude 2.9, was recorded at approximately 23:40 on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The reported epicentre was around 66 kilometres northeast of Phalaborwa, close to the Limpopo-Mozambique border. The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth, with residents in parts of the Mopani District Municipality reportedly noticing light shaking that lasted only a few seconds. Reports indicate that isolated tremors were experienced in areas including Giyani and Lulekani, although the event was considered too small to cause widespread damage. There have been no reported injuries or structural damage linked to the earthquake. The event was tracked through seismic monitoring data, including information from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). 💬 Did you feel the earthquake where you live? Tell us your area in the comments. #VMNews #Earthquake #Phalaborwa #Limpopo #Mopani
