@fairytale.farm: Replying to @juliangetter Castrating animals that do not meet the qualifications to be breeders is an import part of raising animals. In tact males animals should never go to pet homes it is irresponsible in my opinion. #farm #farmlife #homesteading #homestead #kunekune #pigs

Horses are about the only one a vet NEEDS to casterate. Sheep’s, goats, pigs, calf’s, yup all casterates by owner and you can buy everything you need a TS.

If a rancher paid a vet to do all the vet work he wouldn’t be in business very long.

OK as a retired vet tech and a person that is raised for animals. Yes the vet does castrate some farm animals, depending on what the owner wishes to do. But a lot of owners do castrate their own hogs and cattle.

You're absolutely right! I had people act like I was a monster when I did it to our piglets . They literally were walking around and eating as soon as I set them back down. It's not that big of a deal. Some folks need to stay in their own lane!

I live in an area where it’s almost impossible to even get a vet out here. If you want something castrated, you do it yourself. We’ve done our calves, and we’ve banded our sheep & goats since we’ve had our farm.

Yes ma'am. I did my own livestock as well. That's what a bander is for.

when i was a teenager some of the neighboring ranches could castrate up to 400 horses a day in the spring with three crews working, and my dad would do at least half of those because he was so quick with his knife.

I visited a friend with sheep, never been exposed to any of that before. She showed me how, and I helped with docking and castrating that day. Wasn’t my favorite thing I’ve ever done, but was glad I could help her, and glad for the experience.

How much does it typically cost? I’ve only had to have one steer castrated (sale barn and someone couldn’t count to 2 when banding) and it was $10. 6 for a chute fee and 4 for castrating.
