Many Ice cream sandwiches aren’t even REAL ice cream! Ice cream cannot claim that title without meeting a few FDA requirements, the biggest ones being: 🍦Must contain at least 10% milkfat 🍦Must contain at least 20% total milk solids 🍦Must not contain more than 100% overrun (the air whipped into ice cream). For example, 1 gallon of ice cream base should not result in more than 2 gallons of finished ice cream, or it must be labeled “frozen dairy dessert” instead. If you want to see if your ice cream sandwiches or ice cream treats are real ice cream, here’s an easy experiment you can replicate at home: You need an ice cube, a natural ice cream brand to serve as a control, and the ice cream you mean to test. Place them all on plates and let them sit at room temperature for several hours (I did it for 12 hours), and see how much everything melted. Here were my results:
✅ An ice cube melted in about an hour.
✅ The 5-ingredient real ice cream control melted completely flat in about 2 hours.
✅ The ice cream sandwich being tested barely melted at all after 12 hours. When you peel open the ice cream sandwich, it looks like goopy pulp, because that’s basically what it is… The ingredients tell the truth:
👍 A little bit of what they call “real ice cream…”
❌ Then corn syrup, whey, and natural flavors.
❌ Then emulsifiers like cellulose gum (wood pulp) ❌ Even more gums and stabilizers than you’d ever want to see in your ice cream.
❌ Additional emulsifiers like mono & diglycerides, typically made from inflammatory seed oils. If it wasn’t obvious, let me say it plainly - it’s NOT real ice cream; it’s a highly-processed chemical cocktail with a little bit of milk. This brand was bad, but are all ice cream sandwiches this bad?
👉 Unfortunately, yes. Most brands use the same gums, fillers, and emulsifiers to keep them from melting and help them hold their shape and consistency longer than naturally possible… If you want REAL ice cream sandwiches, pay close attention to those ingredient labels. The more ingredients you see, the less likely it is to be REAL ice cream! #IceCream #IceCreamSandwich #Dairy #RealFood #NonToxicLiving
