@mikaelajanalyn: Black Africans (especially Nigerians) swearrr that Black Americans dont have any history/roots/culture in America! My family has lived in America for over 8 generations! Came to the south on slave ships in the 1800s, migrated all across America, mixing with natives, chinese, even caucasians. My great grandfather was adopted and he was half chinese! Some of us havent even begun to look into the deep history of our roots and really we dont have to. Not every black american is required to know where exactly in africa they are from, but we nonetheless still embrace our African roots instead of eraseing it. Pleas believe this doesnt make us any less AMERICAN! Most black americans are mixed with so many different ethnicities (for example, creoles), which is why we simply refer to ourselves as Afro Americans or “Soulaani”. Please stop asking (me especially) this question, if i tell you I’m African American just live with it because thats what i identify with and anything else is really NONE of your business . But trust me once i do my DNA i will LET YOU KNOW. 🤣

I think bc also for a Nigerian it wouldn't be enough to say you're Nigerian (need ethnic grp/LGA, etc). it's like 'yes andd...' lol. so saying 'American' probably sounds so BROAD to many. It's a different cultural climate.

I think you didn't say your ethnicity that's why. Just saying you're from America sounds so broad. As a Nigerian in Nigeria, if someone should ask where I'm from I'll state my ethnicity.

You look Nigerian. Some Nigerians/Africans raised abroad (1st/2nd gen) stop identifying as African so they probably just think you’re doing the same. I doubt it’s intended maliciously. Plus many who still live in Nigeria aren’t educated on/exposed to Black American (Soulaani) history and identity.

Sis, these questions are being asked innocently, trust me . Our early schools don’t really teach us about our African American relatives , they mention slave trade but didn’t connect it to the present day. My very educated brothers also quizzed me , asking where my wife is originally from because in their minds her family simply migrated there years ago. We really have to do better as Nigerians/Africans in 2025 !! We must educate ourselves if we must foster any type of relationship.

Have you stop to think maybe why they ask is they are just genuinely trying to converse with you and want to know more about you. Or you probably look like someone from their part of the country 😏

Also , Nigerians chat this way. It feels intrusive but it’s our normal, sorry . Once they see me ( a Nigerian) they ask: where are you from , your mom and dad , they wanna know the state ,local government, town and sometimes kindred or family , sometimes to form a connection 🤣 Now it’s so many people that look like you who say they are Americans come to find out they are indeed Americans but parents are Nigerians. I would say , Nigeria is a different country with different ways of communicating, it will be alot of things you will find awkward or offensive and intrusive , but again it’s just Nigeria. All the best .
