On May 16, 2025, 3-year-old Conrad David Wade Ashcraft, a nonverbal autistic child, died at Poppy's Playhouse 2, a daycare facility in Park Hills, Missouri. Staff member Tiffany Hedrick reportedly took him into a hallway during nap time, placed a weighted blanket over his torso and face, and pressed her legs over him to restrain him until he quieted down. There were no checks on his condition for about four hours— when his mother came, he was found cold, stiff, and with a purple limb. Conrad's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit citing gross negligence. State investigators confirmed the daycare was owned by former city councilwoman Spring Gray, who resigned immediately after the incident. Regulators have since revoked its operating license, and local law enforcement has begun a criminal investigation into the restraint method that reportedly killed a child who couldn't speak up for himself. The death has unleashed intense backlash. The daycare's closure has lifted up concerns about uncharted private childcare operations in Missouri, especially those run without state oversight. Conrad's family and community have vowed to demand justice— not just for him, but to prevent another tragedy like this from happening again. Institutions are now facing tough questions: how did this method even qualify as caregiving, and how can regulation prevent such deliberate harm in places meant to protect kids?
