@oldgloryarchive: Today, August 9, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped the second nuclear weapon used in war, code-named “Fat Man,” from the B-29 bomber Bockscar. The mission, led by Major Charles Sweeney, had originally been planned for the city of Kokura, but cloud cover and smoke forced the crew to divert to Nagasaki. The bomb weighed about 4,670 kilograms and used plutonium as its core. It exploded at 11:02 a.m., releasing an immense blast equivalent to about 21 kilotons of TNT. The devastation was catastrophic, killing tens of thousands instantly and many more in the weeks and months after due to injuries and radiation. This attack, along with the bombing of Hiroshima three days earlier, played a decisive role in Japan’s surrender on August 15, 1945, effectively bringing World War II to an end. #WWII #airforce #History #army #war
