When someone says “does that make sense?” After they finish speaking, I’m like oh God- this person has suffered terrible emotional or psychological abuse from someone close to them.

Over explaining and the worry of being misunderstood is a trauma response. 🩵

My parents..they only receive superficial conversations and if I bring up something that is deep and emotional they will either get really defensive or completely dismiss me. My husband and I can talk for hours about the same subject and walk away with a sense of growth and shift in perspective.

How about when they don’t even try to appear to be listening, they turn around, close their eyes, or look up at the roof while you talk lol

And then we become extra articulate to compensate for that feeling.

This is me. Raised in a home where kids are seen and not heard. Weren’t allowed to laugh at the dinner table. Eventually I stopped talking and nobody noticed. This went on for YEARS. I’m still having a hard time communicating because I don’t feel what I have to say is important at all.

they can only meet you as deep as they know themselves and that is so superficial that it makes US feel like we're the problem💔

The brain scramble! I pride myself on owning communication skills when I grew up in this household. Being with a person who makes me question my ability is wild. They often will get stuck in semantics to throw you off from the point you are making.

I've walked out of conversations MID SENTENCE bc I could visibly see the person I was talking to was not processing a thing

my mom would tell me "you won't be a communication major" and it took a LOT of people telling me I'm an excellent communicator to realize it was about her

Yes! I’ve spent my entire adult life learning how to be more well spoken in hopes that people will listen/believe me !

Yup… you spend your whole life leveling up your communication skills just to get a deniel or another attack from your emotionally immature parents 😅 Thankfully, I’m finally uninstalling that program in my thirties 😁

Yeah the gaslighting gets bizarre, u actually start to believe that you are a poor communicator or that your not intelligent and don’t speak well, it’s crazy what starts to happen

I can recall a lot of time spent listening to them tell me how I was wrong and they were right, about anything and everything. My view was invalid. Even still as an adult.
