it's actually illegal to take unused material from the dumpster which is crazy I work construction and it's unbelievable how much material goes to waste

I'm a contractor. we have a wood stove. I never throw wood cutoffs in the landfill! we keep a separate bag for burnables - cardboard, cutoffs, packaging - and then put it in our stove in the winter

If you check outside any college dorm building at move-out time in May, it is ASTOUNDING how many perfectly good useable items those kids throw away 😩

I do a lot of apartment cleans and evictions. i struggled so much for a while with the guilt of having to throw things in the landfill. the first time I did an eviction clean out I wanted to keep all the food to donate. but most evictions have so much stuff you just can't do it yourself and your boss is paying you for your time so it takes it out of their pocket when you're going through everything and bringing stuff to your car.it physically hurt for a long time to throw away perfectly good things. after doing so many I realized I literally can't keep everything that's valuable I'm only one person and to keep my job and pay my rent I have to work with the system. I felt so bad like I could do so much more but I'm only one person. so many toys clothes electronics food just get thrown into the dump. as much as I hate it that's the reality and I really wish It could change. I brought home a lot of good stuff that would have gone into the dump regardless. for the first few months working here I had my car stuffed with stuff to donate and eventually with all that realized that's just how the system is and I hate it and it hurts. and I wish more people would care.
