@theunconventionaljew: Candles mark sacred time, carry prayers and invite blessing across different religions…I always found is weirdly fascinating Jews light candles on their version of an alter after learning how Afro Cuban religions light theirs in their altars. Boveda anyone? In Judaism, Shabbat and Yahrzeit candles honor peace, divine presence, and the soul’s eternal light. In Christianity, votive candles represent prayers continuing to burn before God, even after one leaves. In Buddhism and Hinduism, lamps and candles honor deities, illuminate the path to wisdom, and dispel spiritual darkness. In Afro-Caribbean traditions like Santería or the 21 Divisions, candles call and honor spirits, focus intention, and serve as energetic offerings. In folk and indigenous practices worldwide, fire is a bridge between worlds, carrying messages to ancestors and spirits. No matter the culture, a candle’s flame is seen as a messenger, a small, living light in the darkness that speaks of hope, guidance, memory, and connection to something beyond ourselves…light it up! #theunconventionaljew #shabbatcandles #candlemagic #witchcraft

I’m a Jew and I’m 23. My mom died in December and her and I used to talk religion for hours. She converted for marriage with my dad and reverted shortly before she died. I used to be at odds with Judaism but because of her I got connected to it. I learned so much about Judaism that made it so much more likable. Like I felt it it was taught like it was done it would make sense. Kabbalah and the how Judaism was formed all make sense with the religion. I love it so much

when I light, I still myself, clear my mind, and as I light for each of my 8 children, I visualize their birth and set good intention and request good direction for their paths.

I was actually thinking about this before lighting this Shabbos. Lots of info about witchcraft lately due to whatever is happening with astrology/the moon and starting making the connection with those white candles, etc. Im chasidic but this literally made my connection to lighting much deeper…we’re bringing a day in that transcends time and space with certain practices that are so similar to “magic.” (I can’t call it magic 😉) like, wow!!!!!!

Candle magick that’s practiced by witches is a completely different concept. Agree that Judaisms practice with candles on Shabbat is not the same. The one similarity between both practices is that planetary hours are typically used. Candle magick focuses on the intention and charges the candle with the intent. That then transmits into the astral realm and eventually manifests into the material realm. Candle magick has some cool concepts like carving sigils into the candle, dressing the candle with oils that draw in energy, and of course there’s different colored candles that carry different type of qualities. It’s basically used as a tool for manifestation. There’s nothing wrong with it. Kids practice it during their happy birthday moment when they blow out their birthday cake candles while making a wish. Manifesting is a gift and we all should learn how to use that power.

😂 my set definitely looks like the alter it is. I use jack and Sally candle sticks for my spouse and I, a pumpkin shaped holder for our kiddo, and a wax warmer that looks like a cauldron because i like shabbos to smell sweet. ive recently started lighting a separate candle in a hanging lantern for the world to help me focus the prayers I always include for all that is not my immediate family. the table i use honestly looks witchy af but it brings me joy and helps me keep the mitzvah.
