When I played ball people used to say I was a top-notch on-ball defender and even shot blocker. My tricks was forcing a player to his weak hand because very few players are ambidextrously skilled. If you just do that you will be a decent defender. If you want to be elite apply high energy and keep the defender in front of you at all times.

The only bad thing with an overcut is if the defender goes behind the back or switches up sides fast and get an easy drive
