Potty training can look very different for children with special needs—especially when there may already be established routines, sensory challenges, or communication differences. It’s not “too late,” but it often requires more patience, creativity, and structure. We are not 100% there but we are almost there. So happy that @Aeroflow Urology is with us every step of the way Here are some helpful tips: 1. Use visuals and social stories. 2. Start with scheduled sitting. every 30–60 minutes 3. Find strong motivators. (a favorite snack, verbal praise, a special toy—and reserve it only for potty success.) 4. Make the bathroom sensory-friendly. ( Bright lights, flushing sounds, or cold seats can feel overwhelming.) (Try:A padded toilet seat, A step stool for stability, Noise-canceling headphones if the flush is scary,A comfort object (like a fidget or stuffed animal) 5. Use underwear training when ready. (We can NOT do this one. Tried and doesn’t work for us it ends in urine everywhere all day BUT it works for many people) 6. Communication supports. (PECS or AAC Button) 7. Expect regressions and plateaus. (Accidents are part of the process—try not to treat them as “failures.”) 8. Overall Be consistent across settings. #pottytraininingmama #fyp #autism
