Today we are back and I have teamed up with my friends affinitywater again to share our top plant, garden and water saving advice for the end of autumn. It may seem like the garden is slowly winding down for the year, but there is still plenty we can be doing, to keep our plants, wildlife and gardens happy. This time of the year is when I like to do a lot of the preparation to get the garden ready to have a successful start to next year’s growing season. Just like the warmer summer months, the key to successful plant and garden care is water, and now is the best time to not only try to be a bit more water wise when it comes to using it, but it’s the perfect time to save and store it for next year too. Capturing rainwater could not be easier and in our UK climate, over the course of the autumn and winter months, even just a small shed or greenhouse roof can capture a surprising amount. Not only is this rainwater free, it is also more beneficial to your plants too. To capture rainwater, simply connect guttering and a water butt to any outside buildings, and you are done! If this is not possible you can capture more water than you may imagine by leaving troughs and large buckets outside too. It is also time to start to reduce how often you water your houseplants, as they start to enter their winter dormancy. As a general rule I like to reduce it to once or twice a month, and remember to use captured rainwater where possible. Don’t let those fallen leaves go to waste, as they really are garden gold. Collect them from hard surfaces (and gutters to prevent blockages) and bag them up for leaf mould. When spread across your garden borders and pots, not only does this add nutrients, but will help to lock in more moisture, reducing the amount you need to water your soil. And finally, it is time to plant out spring bulbs, but just make sure you are raising the bottoms of any pots to allow for drainage, to prevent water logging. Thank you so much for watching, and please head to affinitywater for more advice, I love you all, Joe #Affinitywater #gardening #wateringtips #watersaving #saveourstreams #autumngardeningjobs
