relatability to medical providers also helps ease the patient-practitioner relationship

They do Healthcare providers 0 favors by not letting us share a little about ourselves. It dehumanizes us even further. My own favorite providers are ones who share their personal experiences, makes me less panicked that I'm not being understood.

Tiny sass can be good sass. One has to set a boundary. You're doing the patients a huge favour, it's in their best interest. Putting "so what's up?" in my toolbox 👏

No one should be talked to that way so it’s good you stood up and de-escalated it. De-escalation doesn’t mean backing down.

I did something similar when I worked in human services. Client started talking about stuff that could have removed them from the program and I said, “Nah-ah. Don’t get us caught up now.” This client had issues with explosive outbursts, but that one caught them off-guard. They apologized in a way that made sense to them. Pretty pleased with that outcome.

But what also might have helped actually is the "what's up?", because seems a little less formal, more chatty. Because oftentimes we go to a clinician and the whole interaction feels very cold and impersonal. "What's up?" feels more personal like even two acquaintances catching up.
