@thedrdurag: Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in that leads to HbS which, when deoxygenated, turns red blood cells into the sickled form which can break or adhere to blood vessel walls. There are a multitude of complications that can occur and it is important to know when you or a loved one is in a sickle cell crisis. Symptoms include but not limited to: - Unrelenting bone pain/tenderness/swelling - New chest pain - Difficulty breathing - Stroke-like symptoms - Other nonspecific symptoms It’s important to seek medical attention for treatments like supplemental oxygen, pain control, empiric antibiotics and possible blood transfusion.
