Did similar at Headingley Ashes 2023 with England 7 down needing 30 odd but England got over the line so it didn’t take much notice. The one at the Oval should be the big lesson to him to just see it home

yeah this is what I don't get... you can still be attacking and positive without looking to it every ball. I'm not saying they needed to take all day but even 40 runs in 20 overs would've been doable if they'd just punished the REALLY bad ball & been more cautious with the ones on the fence. India were in no situation to come back into the game if we'd defended; the momentum only changed because of the wickets, not the dots.

Elephant in the room is that none of that england side are mentally tough enough to drag them over the line when stokes is not there. Too many of them are like mark waugh, pretty on the eye but get out at the worst times when they need a steve waugh style player to grind them to the win on sheer will power.

Smith's out was worse in my opinion. He had all day to get 27 runs (after Overton smashed 2 boundaries). to come running down the track and nick off, when you have 89 overs to get 27 runs is outrageous.
