Separation of church and state? Not really anymore. The IRS will not enforce the Johnson Amendment against churches that endorse political candidates during religious services, effectively allowing them to engage in political speech while remaining tax-exempt. The recent change comes after a lawsuit by the National Religious Broadcasters Association and several churches. They argued that the rule violated their First Amendment rights and, together with the IRS, filed a court request in Texas to halt enforcement of the law, a rule that has existed since the 1950s to keep religion and politics separate. The Johnson Amendment, a landmark legislation passed in 1954, prohibits tax-exempt organizations, including houses of worship, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. It was a crucial step in maintaining a clear separation between religion and government. Under this change, churches can now explicitly tell their members which candidates to vote for—from the pulpit, during worship, on church property—and they will not lose their tax-exempt status for doing so. And while it’s still technically illegal for churches to directly donate to political campaigns, the lack of enforcement and the IRS’s vague language open the door to a well known pattern: political activity cloaked in “faith”, powered by unchecked money, and protected by legal ambiguity… [ID: A video of Syanne, a disabled Afro-indigenous Latina speaking into the camera from her pink office and bed. She has long black hair, tan skin and brown eyes and is wearing a black shirt.] #TaxTheChurch #TheMoreYouKnow #TrendingNow #ThisJustHappened #BreakingNews
