This 2015 review highlights that women who undergo early menopause (and thus experience a longer duration of estrogen deficiency) have higher rates of AMD, implicating menopausal estrogen loss as a risk factor. Conversely, epidemiologic studies suggest that women with greater lifetime estrogen exposure – for example, those on postmenopausal hormone therapy or even those with a history of oral contraceptive use – tend to have a lower risk of developing AMD and related retinal changes. (Notably, one large study (POLA) found no significant protective effect of hormone replacement on AMD, underscoring that the relationship is complex.) Mechanistically, the drop in estrogen during menopause is associated with increases in pro-inflammatory #cytokines and oxidative stress markers in ocular tissues, which are key drivers of AMD pathogenesis. These findings underscore the importance of hormonal status in female eye health: a precipitous decline in estrogen may accelerate retinal degeneration, whereas timely interventions might be protective.
