maybe unpopular but I use a prong collar. they walk beautifully, my arms don't get ripped apart, and overall it's better for them too because they aren't constantly pulling and putting all that pressure on their throat.
Do I care if they learn to loose leash walk without the prong? I do not. not that important to me. in fact, it's better for us.

Loose lead walking can’t really be ‘taught’ imo it comes from the dogs foundations being solid, all pain being ruled out, mental and physical stimulation and all needs being met eg toileting, drinking, eating. After all of that it should fall into place.

The way I just completely abandoned the idea of “loose leash” it’s either heel or be free

Engagement & going slower than you think you need are key for dogs who find the environment more rewarding than their human, (in my experience). Basically access to the environment is determined on whether you are capable of engaging with me (if my goal is structure/a consistent loose leash walk). You are 100% right that this comes with time and practice on both the human and dog end

Cedar pulls on leash, Cedar gets out of his kennel & bolts to the backdoor, spins around 5 times & sometimes even refuses to sit. 😂

I don't need a loose leash, just don't pull. They can walk in front, the leash can be taut, I don't care as long as they're not dragging me around, and that's easier to achieve than proper loose leash walking! mild preassure of a taut leash gives them a clear indicator of their limit

I feel ya. A martingale and teaching leash pressure really helped us. I recently discovered the joys of a 10ft leash so Cannoli doesn't rip my arm off when I let him break to sniff.

Astrid(my dog) walks better off lead than on lead 💔 she freaks out when people walk past us too slowly so it's hard 🥲🥲

Trying to have a perfect loose leash was literally making our walks miserable 😭
Honestly it didn't get better UNTIl I started allowing my dog to pull me on certain equipment.
harness? Pull to wherever you want. Flat collar? walk (semi) nicely!

Also the puppy stage is so hard regardless 😭 there are so many things to teach at once and once one thing is solved another thing that was never a problem before emerges

Depends on the dog too!! Dogs who are super sensitized and relaxed a lot easier to lose leash train… I have a GSD mix who loves using her nose and is very emotionally sensitive so she uses her environment to gain information to help she needs to feel… was an absolute pain to train loose leash walking 😭

This is kinda sad. You're limiting your dog's world and joy so much with this training approach.

i’m in the opposite. i’m trying to teach my dog he doesn’t always have to walk in a heel and idk how to get him to not do that. like i try to let him sniff around and what not but he just won’t

Leash training is not hard, complicated, or take very long. If it’s any of those, you’re missing critical elements and need a new process.

i think i overshot teaching loose leash walking bc now my 2yr old gsd mix will walk slow as possible, almost comical, and will take her time on walks. it now takes us 23 mins for one mile. and she used to be awful and used to pull me everywhere and couldn’t walk on a leash at all and now we need to find the middle ground somehow 😅

some breeds are prone to pulling. walking loose leash isn't the flex most people think it is. my ESS just turned two and I'm finally really working on loose leash because she's got the brain cells for it. her breed is also not great at recall, but her's is 100% accurate even when she's stuck in her nose. I'm gonna flex that more than loose leash 🤣

the fact that my dog understands how to walk loose leash for a short period of time and then breaks is difficult too bc it's not just about repeating the right thing, it's about NOT rewarding the wrong thing but sometimes I want to take my dog out for enrichment without focusing on training 😭
