what's difficult for me is playing bass "money" notes. ie finding lower "compatible" notes, rather than just playing a melody or root progression that sounds intuitive by ear.

I think a good use of a chord in a normal riff is rotten apple by alice in chains. there's literally no other chords in the song apart from the main riff, but stiiilll

I used that same idea for a tapping bass line I wrote. Used the low end for the root and played the 3rd and 5th up past the 12th fret
