One of my first real friends, 4 years after we became friends when I was like 14 told me that they'd secretly hated me the entire time and it was so frustrating I never noticed, and we only hung out so much cause their mom thought I was good influence. I NEVER got over this. I'm autistic and really struggle with cues and tone, so I always question everything.

yes, this. I feel like I don't have friends anymore but then I call everyone a friend and no one calls me their friend. I don't know, it feels like as an adult i only have colleagues or acquaintances. no friends.

Therapy has helped me manage this by reminding me that it’s actually really mean of me to think my friends would lie to me like that - I love my friends so much, and they’re such wonderful people, and I know they’d never do that. Remembering that “My friends secretly hate me” isn’t a statement about ME as a person, it’s a statement about THEM, shuts it down in my mind SO FAST.
