When someone is black tagged, if you linger there, you are delaying care for someone that can actually be saved. I know it sounds harsh, but that is triage in an event like this

In an interview he said he apologized to the women for "mistakenly" giving her a black tag and pretended to give her a new tag. He hoped that would give her some comfort or hope.

It’s wild how many people are so young they don’t understand we didn’t all have cell phones and if we did…there was no service. Just crazy to think about when so many of us lived it in real time.

I participated in a mass casualty training event a couple years ago and this is what they do. you're separated by how critical your needs are. theres no empathy, theres no emotion. its just facts and action.

Hindsight is 20/20…people don’t get to judge a person’s actions in such an extreme situation.

I worked for a cell phone company on 9-11 and there was no service. They went without service for weeks after 9-11. That’s why there is now services like first net for first responders. First net was created because of 9-11

He did staye that he told her that help was coming, but she kept screaming, "I'm not dead!". If that had been my Mum and the story is true...there's no way I'd want to receive that call. The false hope, expecting her to be fine and she'd come back home, then the trauma of knowing she had passed. I couldn't cope with that.

Most people didn’t have cell phones back then, and even if you did, the lines were jammed and down. I worked at an internet company at that time, and it was so new that all news sites had crashed from the traffic. Customers were calling the landline all day to yell at us because people didn’t understand how it worked. He couldn’t have helped her. It’s basic triage.

A Dr on the Oklahoma City bombing docuseries had to make this horrible decision about a child & he said it haunts him to this day. I can't imagine either the choices they have to make

As a paramedic that is exactly right in a mass casualty event. It’s difficult and awful to do this but we have to, to save the most people. Triage and sort. Thank you for explaining this. And yes that person we walk away from always stays with us xx

MCI rules are pretty much the same no matter how big or small the event. He did the right thing. It’s haunting and unless you’ve been or are a first responder.

I commented I wish she could’ve called her daughter but I definitely was not blaming him and I totally understand why he did what he did! I (like everyone) just wish it wasn’t such a tragic circumstance. I was not blaming anyone though or judging

You explained this PERFECTLY! I am a nurse and I remember learning about triaging in nursing school. He did exactly what he was supposed to, unfortunately🥺 and I’m happy that you explaining it to educate the public of what we do when we have to triage in a disaster

You are trained to do so unfortunately as bad you want to stay with the person passing but there was others to get to they could possibly survive. Any big event like this you have to do what you gotta do for that job it hurts and sucks.

I worked across the river in Jersey and my brother was an EMT in Jersey called over there. He still isn’t over it. Also another brother escaped with his life because he missed a meeting he was supposed to have in the south tower that day.

As someone who's trained in mass cas. events, and as a nurse, we can't stop. There's not enough time, supplies, or people to help. Stopping for one means you're not stopping for hundreds more. We have to keep going. It's just not a choice, but we remember everyone we leave behind.
