Needing help isn’t failure. Palliative care doesn’t mean he stopped fighting. Please don’t turn his diagnoses into an argument. Dementia can affect memory, thinking, communication and processing. That doesn’t mean he can never be disagreed with or held accountable. His conditions provide context, not an excuse for everything. Some people have expressed embarrassment about Jeshua or our family because of what we’re going through, and it has affected our support system. We’re not naming or attacking anyone. We simply ask that the rumors and false information stop. As Jeshua said in Need Love: “Keep it real or stay from ’round me because I don’t bother nobody. I need love!” JESHUA IS STILL JESHUA. He can laugh, joke and have a clear conversation, then later forget something that happened minutes earlier or become confused. A clear moment or good day doesn’t erase an illness. For clarity: Jeshua has been diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and rapidly progressive dementia (RPD), and has lived with Asperger’s/autism. He was also treated for autoimmune encephalitis during his recent hospitalization. We are NOT saying he currently has active autoimmune encephalitis. He previously took Adderall for ADHD. We are NOT saying it caused or completely hid his dementia. His cognitive and functional difficulties became much more noticeable to us after he stopped taking it. He’s now moving into palliative care for quality of life, comfort, safety and symptom management while his medical care continues. Palliative care does NOT automatically mean treatment has stopped. Jeshua didn’t suddenly become sick. He’s had significant health problems and hospitalizations for nearly two decades, including sepsis three times and COVID approximately ten times in the past five years. We’re NOT claiming those illnesses caused everything happening today. They’re part of his medical history. Some people didn’t know because Jeshua didn’t tell everybody. Many knew him publicly through music, DJing/clubs, radio, events, community work and Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts. After becoming a husband and father, he intentionally stepped away from public life. His life didn’t stop because the public stopped seeing it. Please look at his WHOLE medical picture instead of one diagnosis. FND, RPD and autism are different conditions; we’re NOT saying one causes another. Jeshua is one person living with multiple conditions. We have hundreds of pages of medical records and have invited people to appointments to hear directly from his care team. People are entitled to opinions, but opinions don’t replace medical records or the professionals actually caring for Jeshua. If someone still chooses their own narrative, we cannot keep carrying the responsibility of convincing them. My responsibility is my husband. Our energy belongs with Jeshua, our children, his care and our family. He is still here. He is still fighting. Above everything else, he is still Jeshua.
