the person on the other end has no idea how big a question it is (how much time it's going to take for the call), or any time to research or prepare an answer. you also give them no ability to think about it, and it's likely you'll get a worse answer by putting them on the spot. just ask the question via email and offer to chat if it doesn't make sense.
