@dr_mikem: Knowing how to handle choking is the MOST important skill EVERY parent should know to able to save your child’s life #pediatrics #pediatrician #parenting #choking
Here's a good story. Several years ago at a Walmart I saw a mom running from the snack bar and screaming "My baby, my baby." This boy was purple. I grabbed the kid from mom, draped him over my left arm & whacked him twice between the shoulder blades. A piece of hot dog flew out. He started crying & regained his natural color. Mom got right in my face & screamed, "You didn't have to hit him that hard!" Jesus wept.

“as if you were abusing them” that sounds bad but it’s so important. Having a bruised back is nothing compared to potential brain damage 💔

My 16 month old choked on a cookie last night. His lips were blue and everything. Turned him upside down over my knee and did back blows and it came out. I never thought I would ever have to actually do this, but I’ve also never been more thankful to have training on these situations.

Another reason not to let kids eat in their car seats either. Car seats tilted back, rear facing, if they’re choking while you’re driving you can’t hear them/see them to help them.

The moment you said "when your child is walking and eating something" I realised that should never happen. And if I have kids, it never will, thanks man.

As a nurse I never skip a choking educational video. A refresher is always great. Especially now that I’m a mom 😌

We also keep a life vac on top of our fridge, and one in the car so it’s always with us!

When my daughter was about 1,5yo and she was eating, she stopped making sounds and was just staring. I immediately picked her up, placed her on my lap so her head was lower than rest of her body and started patting her back. That did the trick.

My son choked on calamari in a restaurant, he was 4, I got him over my knee and did absolutely whacking back blows. I remembered someone saying cracked ribs heal. Luckily the food came flying out of his airway but yes it was silent. Very scary.
