Yep. The internal experience of many perpetrators / bullies is that they see themselves as powerless and misunderstood, which makes them believe that they couldn't possibly be doing anything wrong.

Power = control/regulation/safety.. that’s why they hold onto the role of parent at every age. When you step out of the role into equality they become disregulated and anxious and blame you as the cause because you’re no longer their emotional salve

I think for most estranged parents, power feels like control, which is why they try to control everything & everyone all the time.

That is such a great perspective!! We think it’s the same power that fills you with confidence. That we should feel that literal rush of power over our children 🤯 That made me look at “we did our best” differently … oh wow 🤦♀️

Power and Authority or two different things. I think power feels like courage, strength and being supported…backing yourself. Authority should feel like responsibility and the kind of pressure that makes you grow.

I'm 40 the only job I can get is cashier, I most definitely do not feel powerful. Not even enough to pay my bills and not have to live with my controlling mother.

Power is freedom without consequence? Couldn’t agree less. Thats the opposite of true. Power is accepting responsibility without fear but with integrity

Are you projecting the feeling of the power you have over adult children?

Respectfully, I think there are some context in which it can come with a feeling. Or perhaps travel with other feelings? For example, a sudden promotion at work can come with it a charge when you realize people are reacting to you differently. And I think that’s related to whatever drives people in power related violence. But to your point, I think most power, especially in long-standing family dynamics is so gradual as to be invisible.

Power does too have a feeling!! Try being a primary charter guest on a yacht for a week and tell me your perspective doesn’t change. They asked me, ME, little old me, if it was ok to move the yacht to a new location. Every time! My food preferences took precedence over everyone else’s. No one ever told me no. List goes on and on. It’s been hard readjusting to real life.
