@yourrichbff: It’s easy to point fingers at doctors, but most of them never learn what anything actually costs—and they’re not the ones driving up your bills. I’m grateful to @Doctor Mike for the opportunity to talk about the financial realities of med school, why he's stayed true to his values on social media, and more. Most people don’t realize your doctor has no idea what your insurance bills you and secondly we don’t make more money for ordering labs or imaging or medicine - it’s just more work for us.

I work in healthcare, have insurance thru hospital I work at, but if I was to be seen in the ER at said hospital the Dr isn’t covered by the insurance, they are out of network! This should be illegal!!!!

It’s not about cost…and doctors shouldn’t know because people are cruel enough… the real concern should be if the doctor isnt knowledgeable they shouldn’t be allowed to tell you it’s in your head. Or mess with your charts if you want a second opinion.

Yep. The only thing doctors know is that it’s covered or not. And then there may or may not be a copay.

The medical school process and becoming a doctor encourages financial ignorance so that hospitals can cheat doctors in compensation.

I don’t understand why the cost of something is different if you are self pay vs if you have insurance. This xray should be one price no matter who/how you pay

Many doctors are now employed by hospitals … the providers / managers control the cost knowledge.

Dr. Tom DO | Family Doctor :
Direct Primary Care (DPC) doctors explicitly tell their patients what medication, labs, and imaging costs. They also know the low monthly fee (opposite of concierge) that their patients pay. They also spend 2 to 4 times the amount of time with their patients.
