I have been in this situation. And the person asking these questions it seemed like it was more of an interrogation than trying to make conversation. I answered in monotone and gave no further feedback. So I had to say I was a private person and reserved.

My rule is that if they do not open up first about personal things i will not ask anything. I have been told that i am very cold by other manager colleagues but in my opinion it’s the bare minimum. The employee gets to decide how much they share, as i decide for myself in relationship to my boss.
