Soda companies today don't care one bit about keeping a "relic" of old design. The hole is there today because of the term "minimum viable product." It's a cost savings thing. If the part functions fine while using 30% less material, then why waste the material when you could punch it out and reuse that 30%. 30% of one little tab doesn't sound like much, but over the millions and millions of can tabs produced every year, it adds up.
