eckles is honestly such a good written character, his "selfishness" towards penelope stem from the visceral need to be needed bcs that's how he view their relationship, he so tragic and so complex but ppl can't accept that and instead prefer to call him trash, they'd rather love the slaver than th enslaved, the scene where penelope tells eckles to go back to his "new master" disgusted me. even though she knew abt his situation she cast him aside not caring a single bit abt what would happen, eckles the same man who care of his ppl whenever he could was brainwashed into selling them out. People love complex characters until its a slave
