I consider the achievement of the Soviet Union really impressive. They inherited a country that, at the beginning of the 20th century, had only one tenth of the industrial production of the US and Germany, with 80% of its population stuck in agriculture, widespread poverty and lack of housing, very low productivity, only around 30% literacy, poor infrastructure, and an average wealth per person at about one third of what people had in Germany or Britain, half of Italy. And yet, in the span of just forty years, they managed to provide housing to millions, build one of the largest industrial economies in Europe, and even launch a space program that rivaled the most advanced countries in the world.
