↳ Japan is changing from an instant refund tax-free system to a refund-based tax-free system for tourists. ↳ Instead of buying items tax-free at checkout you will pay full price including tax first and get the tax refunded later after airport/customs confirmation ↳ When shopping show your passport when buying items and pay the normal taxed priced. Save all receipts. ↳ Before leaving Japan bring all tax-free items with you to the airport. ↳ You can only apply for the refund at the airport before departure. Anticipate long lines at the airports if you plan on applying for the tax refund and arrive before your flight accordingly. ↳ Customs will/must confirm you are taking them out of Japan and may ask you to present the items. You must do this within 90 days of purchase or you will no longer be eligible for the refund. ↳ You MUST have the items with you. If you do not have them with you because you packed them separately, shipped them ahead of you to go home, lost them, or in general cannot show requested items at all customs, you may lose the whole refund and/or have to pay a fine/penalty in some cases. ↳ After Customs confirms everything you receive your tax refund. Refund methods may include: Cash (Yen), Credit card refund, Bank transfer, or App transfer. ↳ There will be no more “Consumable vs General Goods.” The old system categorized Snacks/cosmetics & Clothing/electronics differently and had different rules for tax-free. Under the new system everything is treated the same. ↳ With this change there will be no more special sealed bags on consumables.
