did you know hinduism devotes nine days to celebrate the divine feminine? as a first-generation south asian american, staying connected to my roots hasn’t always been easy! america doesn’t really make space for different cultural and religious celebrations. with no guaranteed time off for hindu holidays and the hustle of everyday american life, celebrating the way we would in india can feel almost impossible. additionally, my parents moved to wherever their business had the best opportunities, which meant growing up pretty isolated from the gujarati community. outside of dance class, i didn’t have indians friends—there were only two others at my school. between their own hustle, my parents did everything they could to teach us about our culture, religion, and the traditions that connected us to our roots. today, if you ask any gujarati american about their favorite time of year, chances are they’ll say navratri ❤️‍🔥 growing up, it was my chance to pull out all the gorgeous indian outfits i didnt get to wear otherwise, put together my favorite bangle combinations, and wear those statement earrings that looked SO good but hurt by the end of the night 💃🏻 weekend after weekend, we’d drive to nearby towns, dress up in new outfits, eat our favorite indian street food, and dance all night (garba). people of all ages and backgrounds came together to dance, pray, and celebrate the divine feminine 💫 navratri is so much more than the outfits, food, and garba. it’s a celebration of the triumph of the divine feminine energy and maa durga’s victory over evil. in India, the celebration lasts nine nights to honor her nine forms, each representing different qualities of the divine feminine: power, courage, wisdom, compassion, protection, strength, devotion, destruction, and transformation. for me, growing up gujarati american, navratri was more than a festival. it was a way to reconnect with my roots, find my community, and feel closer to a part of myself that wasn’t part of my everyday life 🪷 • • • #navratri#navratrilengha#garbaseason#hinduism#divinefeminineenergy
