my grandad died when I was 10, and I remember being ill at the time and in bed asleep when my dad came in, woke me up and told me. I then remember waking up a couple hours later not knowing if it was real or not

I was a teacher (have since left the profession) but did my final dissertation in university on helping children process and understand bereavement. it's a daunting topic but there's so many good resources online to help and make scary conversations seem pretty straight forward.

I lost my mum when I was 20, I now have a 3 y/o and a 1 month old, and when my toddler has asked where my mum is I just say that she's a butterfly and everytime she sees a butterfly she says it's my mum and I find it incredibly sweet. One day I'll tell her the truth but for now I'm going to let it be. It's hard no matter what

my granda passed when my son was 3. the house was left to me and we were moving into his house. my wife told our son that Granda became a star in the sky and we can wave to him at night time to always say good night.

We lost my MIL suddenly and unexpectedly last year, I did some research online and there’s lots of helpful websites out there for this kind of conversation and some give age appropriate wording to use. Biggest thing I took away from it was telling my 3 year old son that she had died (and explaining what that meant), not using phrases like she’s passed away/we’ve lost her/she’s gone to sleep etc. It’s useful to remember that kids emotions won’t necessarily reflect the situation, I told our son we’re all very sad about it and his response was “I’m not sad” and carried on playing with his toys 😅 I had to have the same conversation with him a few times but that’s just because they learn through repetition. It’s a very hard conversation to have but it’s necessary. Thinking of you and your family 🫶🏻
